Psilocybin is a hallucinogen and the most active component of „magic mushrooms“, Psilocybe semilanceata and Cyanescens. The mushrooms are often dried and powdered, but are occasionally eaten refreshing. Although no structural abnormalities have been reported related to psilocybin exposure during pregnancy or in animal studies, use may be associated with acute toxicity and is not recommended during pregnancy.
Pregnant women should avoid hallucinogens in most conditions. A comprehensive prenatal ultrasound is recommended after vulnerability in the first trimester, if not already offered as part of routine prenatal care, given the limited information available on the lethal effects of its use in pregnancy.
